Hip Hop in Bs.As.
So Pablo told me about this club - and he put me on the list to go. He mentioned they would be playing hip hop so I was pleased with that. Left the apt around 2 AM to go check it out. I threw on my black t-shirt with a picture of Bruce Lee at the turn tables in yellow. Black pants. Black eyeliner. Very dark, basically.
Anyhow - the place was only about 4 blocks from my apt. I figured it would be a small joint - like going to the Temple Bar in Santa Monica or something. Welllllll, it was more like HOB Sunset size - actually a little bit larger - so maybe like 1200 people or so. So I walked to the front of the line and they just let me through. I think just being a girl and solo they were cool with it. So I left 50 Argentines outside on the sidewalk and made my way in.
I told the girl at the window inside I was on Pablo's list. She told security to let me through. Nice! No cover or anything. Easy breezy. I get inside and I hear Snoop playing. Walk over to the bar, I get a Caipiroska - basically a Caipirinha with Vodka instead of Caxaça (sp??) - the brazilian alochol made of sugar cane. So, I sip on that and take a couple of laps around the place. I would've LOVED to have taken photos, but being alone and bustin out a tiny digital and taking flash photos - not a good idea. Oh - and if Pablo and/or Tuba were there - there was no way I would've spotted them. Too crowded.
I'll tell you what though - it was cool. They played all very recognizeable hip hop - Jay Z, 50 Cent, Snoop, Missy Elliott, Busta Rhymes etc... like 5% of the kids wanted to be black, 85% of the kids were regular young people, and then 10% were wearing the polo shirts and looking a touch preppy. That was funny.
I walked into some sectioned-off part - they didn't ask me anything - I think it was the all black outfit that did the trick - anyhow, as is often the case - it wasn't all that. Seeing ropes makes you want to cross them - then you get there and its just a bunch of people talking. Anyhow - so I stayed about an hour. Glad I went. Never would've thought my first club here would've been a hip hop club. I like that though ;) I kinda laughed to myself a little while I was there - thinking that they say it "heep hohp" - and no one on the dance floor was like freaking eachother or any kind of dancing that you normally associate with that music in the States. There was this one guy though who was on a raised platform and kicked ass! Just dancing solo - pop and lock and all that. Dunno where he came from.
When they played Jay Z I had a flashback of when we had him at STAPLES and I saw him walking down the corridor wearing a suit, overcoat, fedora and smoking a cigar - then Kobe Bryant walked into the hallway with his ever-pouting wife and said "Yo Jigga, wassup?" and Jay Z said "Kobe, wassup!" and they hugged. I just stood there like 6 feet away thinking "damn, this is cool". I was so close to it. Here, other side of the world, I have no passes or laminates or wristbands - I'm Joan Q. Public. I've basically been living as an observer, not a participant. Its interesting - I dont think i've ever spent this much time alone. Thats good though - I'm glad. Tests your mettle.
alright - so today i was going to go to a museum, but i got lazy. I promise i will tomorrow - or technically, today.
Dunno if I'll ever see Pablo/Tuba again - oh well.
:D
nighty night.
