I went to a corporate party last night – and so I assumed it would be a bunch of stuffy older types, some appetizers, drinks, office banter, and the whole thing would wrap up by 11 or midnight at the latest.

Well…I was wrong. Drinks and hors d’oeuvres from 9 – 10:30. Then some more substantial hors d’oeuvres . Then we sat down at numbered tables – wedding style. Get served wine, bread – then they serve the first course. Its about 11:30 PM at this point. When we’re done – a live band starts playing and everyone heads to the dance floor and dances for like 45 mins, they do a Beatles medley sing-along, conga line… Then back to the tables. Some more water, wine, bread rolls. Then an assortment of pastas are brought out buffet style with several sauces to choose from. When everyone wraps up with the pasta - they bring out a belly dancer. This is at like 1:30. The belly dancer grabs people, makes them dance etc. That goes on for a while. Then back to the tables. At like 2:30 or so all the desserts are set up. Everyone heads back out for dessert. Talk some more. Eventually at like 3:30ish they bring out all these crazy party hats. Its time for something called “carnaval carioca”. Its common in all these big parties (weddings, birthdays, big events etc) to do this. Everyone grabs a crazy hat – sometimes maracas – and you dance to brazilian music. This is around when I left. I actually got home more around 5 – so it probably lasted longer. But get this – after the carioca thing they serve coffee too. So parties of this kind can typically last until 6 or 7 am.

They don’t mess around. If you get invited to an event like this in Argentina – take a nap before you go and wear your dancing shoes – b/c nearly everyone dances. Young and old alike.

Hey - i think I've uploaded a picture. big thanks to Mike Siegel for the pointers. ;)

Here's a picture of my dad's cousin - for those of you who know my dad - aren't they so similar!?!?
