Here's my very first posting. I'll jump right in.
1) watch your step!! this is for various reasons:
a) the sidewalks tend to be pretty broken up, esp. on side streets. lift those feet. there's no room for lazy walkers here. either you pick up your step, or you can eat it pretty hard. less than two days walking around and i've seen people stumble - i've stumbled myself - once on a lifted tile, once because there was a sudden drop i didn't see. very slick.
b) there's dog shite everywhere. everyone has a dog. and for every dog with an owner, there's another one or two without. those dogs are pretty laid back. they walk around or sleep on the sidewalk.
c) there are balconies everywhere - and its quite hot out, so i'm guessing that everyone is cranking up the AC and people hang their clothes out to dry. water starts to drip from these balconies on to the sidewalk below. so pick a side on the sidewalk - walking in the middle where the balcony edges are results in you getting dripped on. if you dont care about this then go ahead and walk in the middle - some may consider it refreshing on a hot day.
2) men wear lots of cologne. you can smell them as they walk by. at first i thought that they should ease up on the cologne use, then i thought to myself "smells better than the dog poo". keep doing what you're doing boys, its a service to the pedestrian.
3) walk/dont walk and red/green lights - these are suggestions, not laws. street crossing is new york style. if you can, go for it.
4) many girls tend to wear little stud earrings. gold, silver, or a precious stone. i think i might invest in a pair :)
5) there are tons of trees - its lovely. very very green too, since we're just leaving spring behind.
6) shirtlessness - happens a bit. teens and young guys putting shirts on, taking them off. the occasional older guy too.
7) hanging out on the step in front of the front door. last night, walking around midnight (and please note, it was a tuesday and tons of people were out and about) i saw three teenage girls just sitting in front of their door wearing flip flops - chatting. i also saw that a few more times during the day. a lady and her husband feeding their baby. and old guy and old lady smoking cigarettes.
thats all for now. i'm off for another walk in the heat.
