Sometimes I swear there is a giant hair-dryer outside my window. Being 20 floors up means you get pretty strong gusts of wind. I toyed with the idea of balcony furniture - but if I get anything too flimsy I imagine it may either fly away or at least create lots of racket moving from side to side. Not worth it.
Speaking of hair - I was walking by one of the cities countless salons late last night and in the window I saw seven 8.5 x 11" picutres of Jean Claude van Damme with different hairstyles. That was AWESOME. When was the last time he was famous?
A random note - Harry Potter is huge here! Not only is it being advertised everywhere you go, there is a monstrous display with a dragon and a beyond life-size Harry Potter flying on a broom at one of the big movie houses in Recoleta. Very cool. In tribute, i even bought some lightening-bolt earrings.... What was that? yes, I'm 28.
Last night I enjoyed my very first mate. Went to the store, bought my bombilla (the metal straw with the filter at the bottom), mate (the container you drink the tea out of) and the yerba (the herb that you pour the water into). It was lovely. I felt very Argentine. Frankly I hope it just tames my appetite a bit. The food here is great, but if you eat out its inevitable that you'll get steak or pasta or empanadas or something with mayonnaise.
Here's a comment on the food - althought there are TONS of restaurants and you can find variety if you look for it - the majority of them serve pretty much the same food.
typical -
tea sandwiches (the white crustless bread kind) with anything from ham, cheese, eggs, olives, lettuce etc.
empanadas - chicken, beef, ham and cheese etc.
pasta - a selection of sauces - then spaghetti, ravioli, tortellini..
pizza - cheese, onions, ham blah blah blah (but nothing wolfgang puckish)
beef - all the time
salad - any combo of lettuce, carrott, cabbage, onion, tomato and a few other ingredients.
desserts - tiramisu, flan, crepes with dulce de leche
oh yeah - they love hearts of palm here. and there is a major lack of cereal variety - being american - this is difficult to deal with, but I welcome the challenge.
anyhow - so you can walk into any basic restaurant and pretty much be satisfied and you wont have a hard time picking something to eat. so if you want to taste something different - you'll have to go a little more upscale where things get more experimental.
there's more on food- but lets not get carried away just yet.
